Janet Mbugua’s Sack Protest: An Unplanned Act of Defiance

Janet Mbugua

In a shocking twist, celebrated media personality and human rights activist Janet Mbugua joined Kenyans in Nairobi’s CBD protests, dressed in nothing less than a sack. While her bold move left many applauding, Mbugua has now revealed it was entirely unplanned.

It Was Impromptu,” Janet Reveals

The former news anchor disclosed that she hadn’t woken up that day intending to don a sack and march alongside her fellow citizens.

"Sometimes we are too early, and other times too late. I had planned to join praying mothers in seeking healing for our country, but I couldn’t wait long enough for the group to arrive," she explained.

Janet found herself swept into the protests, a moment she describes as “being in the right place at the right time.

Calling Out Police Brutality

Mbugua didn’t mince her words when addressing the heavy-handedness of Kenyan police during peaceful protests.

"As seen in some clips shared online, police intolerance, unlawful arrests, and the people's ongoing fight for justice remain evident," she wrote, alongside video footage of officers using excessive force to disrupt demonstrators.

Her criticism echoed the sentiments of many Kenyans, frustrated by the state’s handling of dissent and its increasing clampdown on civil liberties.

The Bittersweet Victory of Abductees’ Release

Janet also celebrated the recent release of several young Kenyans who had been abducted, following days of national outcry. But while she rejoiced in their safe return, she expressed sorrow for the gross violation of their freedoms and the countless others still missing.

"While it’s a relief that some abductees have been reunited with their families, the fact that they were abducted and detained for days—while police deny any involvement—is deeply troubling," she lamented.

A Call to Action

The mother of two urged Kenyans not to be silenced, emphasizing the importance of continued resistance against oppression.

"We carry on with life, but we must also keep amplifying these critical conversations whenever and wherever we can," she wrote, rallying citizens to join the fight in any way possible.

Janet’s History of Activism

This isn’t the first time Mbugua has spoken out against human rights violations. During last year’s Reject Finance Bill 2024 protests, she highlighted systemic failures, rising human rights abuses, and the government’s neglect of its citizens’ needs.

Her message remains steadfast: “Justice be our shield and defender.”

As Kenyans grapple with ongoing social and political unrest, Janet Mbugua continues to be a voice of hope, courage, and accountability.
